DST -20 nT

Poor propagation today but still we had some distant receptions.  Best distant copy today was CW from WW8II who was copied at 510 miles at 329 with no QSB for the full two minutes by W4DEX.  WW8II was also heard Q4 copy on peaks by KGØVL at 443 miles.  The KØAWU / KGØVL path was still good enough for 5x5 SSB with some fades close to the noise.  On the most southern paths WY3T on CW was only heard by WA4LDU.   No signal was detected either direction between WY3T and W4DEX but WY3T copied AB4AM's CW. 

The most interesting reception today by WW8II who received a brief burst of signal from K5HFG:

Signals were slightly better today with the usual ups and downs.  Complete calls were copied between WW8II and W4DEX and WW8II detected CW from K4FI.  Signals between KGØVL and  WW8II were weak but useable except during fades.  

KGØVL and KØAWU were able to swap signal reports on SSB.  WY3T was copied K4FI 559 and W4DEX 429 on a peak.  WA4LDU copied WY3T 559 on peaks with one dip close to the noise.

There isn't a lot to report today due to poor propagation and several regulars participants not being on.  However there was enough signal between WW8II and KGØVL to confirm CW reception in both directions at 443 miles.  WW8II on CW was detected by K5HFG and W4DEX.  K4FI's CW was heard Q5 for about 30 seconds by WY3T.  At close range K4FI and KP2AE was good SSB copy at W4DEX but near 1700 UT KP2AE's signal was beginning to be difficult to copy at W4DEX.

Distant signals were down considerably today perhaps due to a few minor solar flares over the past few days.  Even so, we had several distant signal detections that we will likely not see in the coming months.  KGØVL and KØAWU were still able to use SSB at 323 miles with signals up to S5.   WW8II on CW was weak but still Q4 copy at KGØVL.  WW8II's signal was barely detectable at  KØAWU but slightly better at W4DEX with Q3 copy.  WY3T had some CW copy from W4DEX but no signal was detected from WY3T at W4DEX.  WA4LDU did copy WY3T at 419.  CW was copied both way between AB4AM and W4DEX but signals were to weak for an SSB exchange.  However, the AB4AM / WA4LDU path was useable SSB.

We are still getting daytime receptions over 500 miles.  The WW8II / W4DEX path produced weak but still Q5 CW copy on peaks at 510 miles.  The 443 miles between KGØVL and WW8II was slightly better with KGØVL reporting "WW8II start 549, qsb down to 529 with loud burst at 1 minute 10 seconds. EOT 529. Signal level jolt corresponded with static crashes in the background."  Over the past few years, we have seen multiple occurrences of these instantaneous peaks.  Most have been during transmission when no signal from the transmitting station is heard leaving some doubt of the signal source.   Having peaks like this during weak receptions leaves little doubt about the source. 

WW8II and KØAWU reported weak CW detection in both directions.  The KGØVL / KØAWU path was good copy in both directions.   

On the most southern path, WY3T was not heard by W4DEX but was Q5 copy some of the time at WA4LDU.  K4DBK was good SSB copy on peaks at KW4DE and W4DEX.  K4DBK reported CW heard from WW8II and W4DEX.

WW8II on CW was fair copy during the entire two-minute test transmission at KGØVL and W4DEX.  WW8II copied W4DEX  peaking 539, KGØVL 519 and detected CW from K4FI and K5HFG.  WY3T was good copy at W4DEX for about 30 seconds then into the noise while WA4LDU had a fair signal for the whole two minutes.  AB4AM was much weaker than normal at W4DEX and KP2AE but AB4AM was able to swap signal reports with  WA4LDU in SSB mode.  KGØVL copied  KØAWU 549 with very little QSB and in the other direction KGØVL peaked 42 dB above the noise at KØAWU.

Propagation appears to have been slightly better today.  The KGØVL / KØAWU 323 mile path was good enough for a 54 to 55 SSB QSO.  WW8II on CW was heard on peaks by W4DEX, KØAWU and KGØVL.  WY3T was heard on SSB at WA4LDU and W4DEX but copy was poor.  On CW WY3T was fair copy at WA4LDU, AB4AM and W4DEX.  K5HFG's CW was visually detected by W4DEX during the first 15 seconds of transmission.  AB4AM on SSB was good copy with some deep fades at K4FI, WA4LDU, KW4DE and W4DEX.

The most distant confirmed reception today was 603 miles by KØAWU who copied WW8II on CW at 5 to 7 dB above local noise.  WY3T reported almost readable CW reception from W4DEX at 336 miles.  K5HFG reported possible signal detection from KØAWU at 915 miles, WW8II at 639 miles, W4DEX at 518 miles and WY3T at 515 miles.  WY3T was copied at 419 by WA4LDU and was detected by K4FI.  

Signals between K4FI, WA4LDU and W4DEX ranged from S9+ to near the noise on fades.

Increasing solar radiation in the northern hemisphere plus slightly higher solar x-ray flux today produced the weakest signals we have seen since early last fall.  The most northern path between KGØVL and KØAWU was useable with SSB only on propagation peaks.  CW was consistent with KGØVL reporting "KØAWU began 539, up briefly to 559 on TX antenna, light qsb and 539 to end"

During the first two minute CW transmissions, there was no copy between WW8II and KGØVL but signals were detected both ways on a second attempt. 

On the most southern path WY3T only detected CW from W4DEX briefly but copied AB4AM 549 up to 549 during the second minute.  WY3T was not heard in the other direction

On the short paths signal between WA4LDU, W4DEX and KP2AE were below normal with some QSB taking the signals into the noise at times.

Propagation seemed slightly better today on some paths.  WW8II was fair CW copy at KGØVL at 529/539 and at W4DEX copying 549 with a slight fade near the end of the two-minute transmission.  KØAWU reported KGØVL's SSB slightly weaker today but still Q5 copy.  It seems odd that there was no signal detected between KØAWU and WW8II.  

WY3T heard no SSB today but did copy W4DEX on CW at 539 with no QSB.  In the other direction, WY3T's CW was weaker at W4DEX but likely just due to very slow QSB cycles.  

At less than one hundred miles signal between KW4DE, K4FI, WA4LDU, KP2AE and W4DEX were noticeable weaker today with some paths dipping close to the noise at times.

The only path that was better today was between KØAWU and KGØVL:  

  K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL 55 SSB in short test -- sounds better than last few days

Signals were detected both ways between WW8II and W4DEX but to weak to copy.  Between KGØVL and WW8II signals were weak but good enough for positive identification.  Our most southern station, WY3T, on CW initially was not heard by WA4LDU and W4DEX but did come up enough during the last 15 seconds of the two-minute transmission for a positive ID.  

At less than 100 miles between K4FI, WA4LDU, KP2AE and W4DEX copy was good most of the time but we did see some deep fades mainly on the shortest paths.
