30 January 2020
We saw a significant improvement in propagation today over what we had yesterday.   Signals were good most of the time but had some occasional deep fades.  The shortest path,  KP2AE / W4DEX, 51 miles, showed the most QSB.  The KGØVL / KØAWU path was better with KØAWU reporting KGØVL 579 36db above the noise.  K5HFG, KGØVL and WY3T all copied on CW at W4DEX.  WY3T at W4DEX may have been close to the strongest heard so far for that station.

=====================================================================
17:34 WY3T-TIM: Idle noise today is S4 SSB and S1-2 on CW

17:35 WB4WCJ-PAUL: noise s8 with a new one at s9 noise takes out SSB w4dex weak

29 January 2020

Activity was down and overall signals were not very good except for one path.  K5HFG in Mississippi was briefly the much better CW copy than usual at W4DEX in North Carolina.  As the signal faded about halfway through the usual two-minute transmission there seemed to be some distortion maybe due to multipath ionospheric reflectins.  There hardly enough signal strength to know for sure.  Recording of K5HFG on CW at the link below:

28 January 2020

Propagation out to at least 216 miles was very good with little QSB today.  We found the distant paths to be weak but useable on peaks.  One observation that warrants some thought is propagation on the 365 mile Iowa (KGØVL) to Minnesota (KØAWU) path was much weaker than the 338 mile path between NC (W4DEX) and Florida (WY3T).  The Iowa-MN path had been much better than between NC and FL.

27 January 2020

Propagation was good enough today to warrant a green date.  The Distant signals were not as strong as on the 1st and 10th of this month but still very good with some infrequent QSB.   Some of the short paths exhibited very deep fades that was not seen on the distant paths.  We had ten states represented ranging from Minnesota to Florida.   Many over 500 mile Q5 QSO were made.

==============================================================
In addition to the Net Logger AIM reports below WB8PMD reported CW reception of WW8II 899, KGØVL 579, W4DEX 599, K4FI 559 and KA9FTM 59 SSB.

26 January 2020

Another day of sightly improved propagation from the low four days ago.  But signals did seem to decline during the last minutes while approaching 1800 UT.  KØAWU, Minnesota, reported KGØVL, Iowa, was better copy today but his path to WW8II, Michigan, was weaker than normal.  Both KGØVL and WW8II were copied Q5 at W4DEX, NC, and K4FI, SC.  KA9FTM, IN, was the strongest and most consistent copy of any distant station at W4DEX, NC, at 379 miles.  KA9FTM is not far from being in line with the KGØVL-W4DEX path but KGØVL reported no signal heard from KA9FTM while having Q5 copy from W4DEX.  We've seen that happen before.  After several tries, a Q5 K4DBK- W4DEX SSB exchange was made.

25 January 2020

Propagation may have been slightly better today. After a few days absent KGØVL was back. His SSB was consistent, although not strong, Q5 SSB copy at W4DEX. WW8II was able to make a few quick exchanges with KGØVL but that path wasn't as stable as the Iowa-North Carolina path. KGØVL reported very good copy on N4AOW at 649 miles. WW8II into the Carolinas was about the same as the past few days, just useable on peaks.

24 January 2020

For most of the test period today, local signals were stronger than usual with very little QSB.   We have seen several times when local conditions are very good distant propagation is poor ant that is what happen today.   Signal levels were at or near S9 between AB4AM, KP2AE, K4FI, WA4LDU and W4DEX.  Although during the last few minutes of the test we started experiencing more QSB.
The distant paths produced either no or weak reports.  The KØAWU / WW8II path was weak.  There was no WW8II SSB contacts but his CW was readable at W4DEX.  K5HFG's only report was a weak signal from AB4AM.  WY3T was heard in the Carolinas but only on peaks.

23 January 2020

Signals on most paths today had a lot of QSB.  Even the 51 mile distance between KP2AE and W4DEX ranged from S9 to close to the noise at times.  WW8II and W4DEX was able to make a quick S2 SSB QSO on a quick peak.  Otherwise, SSB on that path was unusable.  CW copy was fairly consistent with WW8II running between 579 and 529.  No SSB contact was made between WY3T and W4DEX but CW was fairly consistent copy.  KP2AE also copied WW8II and WY3T on CW.   WW8II brielfy detected a signal during the CW transmission from WY3T.  That is about an 814 mile path.  KØAWU reported WW8II's CW running between 3 and 10 dB above his noise.  K5HFG detected CW from WW8II and KØAWU but had no copy.

You may have noticed the blog date color above changing from bright green on the 1st and 10th of January.  This is an attempt to quickly identify how we found band conditions each day by scrolling through the past dates.  Perhaps a numbering system would be better?  Any suggestions or comments can be posted by clicking on "comment" at the bottom of the blog.

22 January 2020
Signal reports between participating stations indicate propagation continues to decline.  On the less than 100 mile paths between KP2AE, K4FI, W4DCL, and W4DEX signals were about normal.  But at slightly over 200 miles from the above stations, AB4AM was weaker than normal.  The exception was between KP2AE and AB4AM.  KP2AE being about 50 miles closer to AB4AM had a very good signal copying AB4AM much better than the other stations.

K0AWU reported WW8II's signal was down considerable from recent days and with considerable QSB.  One real surprise was during WW8II's two minute CW transmission.  Initially his signal was near 599 for a few seconds before starting a deep QSB cycle all the way into the noise.  Approximately a 50 dB fade befor recovering but not again reaching over about 549.

20 January 2020

Overall signals were weaker and QSB fades were deep today especially between stations in the southeast.  WY3T for the past few weeks has been good copy on peaks but today was barely detectable into the Carolinas.  KA9FTM, Indiana, at 378 miles, was the most consistent Q5 copy at W4DEX of any station over 100 miles away.  The WW8II / KGØVL 443 miles link seemed to be the most variable with signals ranging between S9 to S1.  The most distant Q5 reception was by KØAWU who reported WW8II's signal 10 dB above the noise at 603 miles.  KGØVL copied K7TOP running 100 watts during a propagation peak, 469 miles.

19 January 2020
Propagation above the 40th parallel north was fairly good but across and below the 40th parallel conditions were rather poor.  Signals between WW8II, KØAWU and KGØVL were good with all being SSB QSO quality less some occasional fades.  Signals between AB4AM, K4FI and WB4WCJ were much weaker today.   K5HFG was able to copy AB4AM on SSB during a few propagation peaks.

W4DEX was not present but was recording the CW transmissions.  KGØVL was weak but readable during the two-minute transmission averaging only 439.  K5HFG was detectable, K4FI 579 with fades to 549, WW8II 439 with fades into the noise.  The above RST based on how the signal was heard, not S meter readings:

R:
1.  Unreadable
2.  Barely readable, occasional words distinguishable
3.  Readable with considerable difficulty
4.  Readable with practically no difficulty
5.  Perfectly readable

S:
1.  Faint—signals barely perceptible
2.  Very weak signals
3.  Weak signals
4.  Fair signals
5.  Fairly good signals
6.  Good signals
7.  Moderately strong signals
8.  Strong signals
9.  Extremely strong signals

T:

 9. Pure DC tone
