16:30 K5HFG: I hear SSB

16:31 WA4LDU-JOE: W4DEX and W2AZQ on SSB

16:33 K5HFG: SSB dropped off. Very deep QSB

16:35 KG0VL-JEFF: Hear W4DEX weak on SSB

16:41 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL started off CW in the noise then built up enough to copy his and my call

16:41 WA4LDU-JOE: I could see Jeff's CW in the scope at first, then it faded. Not strong enough to copy

16:42 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL CW peaked at about 339

16:42 K5HFG: no copy on KG0VLl. Could see his sig on scope

16:44 KG0VL-JEFF: I can hear K5HFG now, just above the noise.

16:44 WA4LDU-JOE: K5HFG signal visible in scope but not strong enough to copy

16:44 WA4LDU-JOE: W4DEX CW blasting thru...599+++

16:45 K5HFG: No copy on W4DEX. Could see his sig on scope

16:46 KG0VL-JEFF: Good copy on W4DEX that go around

16:47 K5HFG: Heard KG0VL call

16:48 W4DEX-DEX: Very nice CW peak on KG0VL during our QSO....signal peaked 559

16:48 W4DEX-DEX: Peak only lasted maybe 5 seconds

  16:48 K5HFG: There was a strong 599 signal for a few seconds

16:49 KG0VL-JEFF: Good copy here Dex

16:50 K5HFG: All I heard was KG0VL's call

16:53 K5HFG: now I hear KG0VL 519

16:56 KG0VL-JEFF: That was amazing Don

16:56 K5HFG: Amazing. Copy KG0VL loud and proud

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

DX propagation seems to be slightly improving daily.  However short path signal strength continue to vary daily.

  • W4AZQ was barely readable at W4DEX, only 98 miles
  • K5HFG CW full call copied for the first time by W4DEX
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16:32 K5HFG: I hear some SSB in and out but no copy.

16:33 W4DEX-DEX: W2AZQ at 98 miles weaker than yesterday

16:33 KG0VL-JEFF: I take that back, just heard some SSB

16:33 KG0VL-JEFF: I think it is W4DEX

16:35 K5HFG: I hear W4DEX light and fading

16:40 K5HFG: I copy W4DEX on SSB at 30% and 34

16:41 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL CW started off at 339 then into the noise....
now back up to 549 and building....569 at end of xmission

16:42 K5HFG: copy kg0vl 338

16:42 KG0VL-JEFF: Don weak but readable now on CW

16:43 W4DEX-DEX: K5HFG CW 329...enough to confirm the call for the first time

16:46 K5HFG: I hear DEX. 219. I can copy some of the calls he is sending

16:47 KG0VL-JEFF: Dex started off pretty good but was really weak at the end

16:47 K5HFG: I see signal on scope but can only copy about 10%. too much noise.

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

Thursday, October 24, 2019

We experienced fairly good propagation on the more distant paths today but only on the QSB peaks.

On the shorter paths signals were weak but had quick peaks.
Normally CW from AB4AM at W4DEX averages 589 to 599 on CW on the 217 mile path.  Today the signal was below the noise with near S9 peaks.  Audio file and graphic of the signal:

Graphic of the fast QSB on AB4AM
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notice how weak the signal is at the start.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

________________________________________________________________________________

W2AZQ detected CW during K5HFG's transmit period.  This is the second time W2AZQ detected K5HFG's CW while no one else to the east did.  The two stations are very close to the same latitude.

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Today we experienced the best mid-day 160M propagation we've seen since last winter.  Multiple DX QSOs were made:

WW8II CW QSO with WA4LDU at 583 miles
WW8II CW and SSB QSO with W4DEX at 510 miles

KGØVL CW and SSB QSO with W4DEX at 810 miles
KGØVL CW and SSB QSO with WW8II at 443 miles

WW8II-WA4LDU QSO as heard by W4DEX
(notice the QSB on WA4LDU vs how stable WW8II's signal is)
       WW8II-WA4LDU QSO MP3 recording

KGØVL CW at W4DEX
(notice the +10dB level burst.  Such instantaneous signal peaks have been reported by multiple stations on multiple paths.  No lightning on the North America map was showing up during this burst.)
KGØVL CW burst received at W4DEX

WW8II also copied SSB on a peak from KP2AE
KP2AE heard CW from WW8II

16:35 W4DEX-DEX: WW8II good SSB copy....actually stronger
          on peaks than locals

16:36 WW8II-BRUCE: W4DEX solid copy on SSB solid QSO

*Good propagation between KGØVL and WW8II today
that allowed QSO in CW and SSB at 443 miles.

*AB4AM was much weaker than normal with fast deep
QSB fades at W4DEX but the same was not observed
  at KP2AE, WA4LDU and W2AZQ.

*KGØVL had partial copy on W4DEX at 808 miles

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Nothing heard from K5HFG at WA4LDU and W4DEX today.  Also K5HFG did not copy WA4LDU or W4DEX.  The 103 mile path between WA4LDU and W4DEX was a bit below normal on SSB.  KGØVL was initially on but lost internet connection so he was unable to coordinate with the group although he reported no signals heard.

Sunday, October 13, 2019

The best DX for the day was KGØVL received by KE8GC Q5 during a full 2 minute CW transmission at 319 miles.    KGØVL also had some copy on KE8GC who was running 100 watts to a dipole with an average height of only about 25 feet.

WW8II's signal was heard but weak at KGØVL and W4DEX.  WW8II detected KGØVL's signal but heard nothing from W4DEX.

ON the short paths SSB and CW was good between KE8GC and WW8II at 130 miles.  Also good between WA1AC and W4DEX at 73 miles.

Saturday, October 12, 2019

16:37 KE8GC-GREG: WW8II, 599

16:39 WW8II-BRUCE: KG0VL VERY WEAK IN THE NOISE

16:40 KG0VL-JEFF: WW8II weak, yet there for the two minute duration

16:52 WW8II-BRUCE: OK TODAY SOLID COPY 599 WITH KE8GC 130 MILE PATH AND       WEAK CW WITH KG0VL 444 MILE PATH SOLID 550 COPY ON AB4AM 546 MILE PATH

16:54 AB4AM-ROB: Light copy on WA4LDU on SSB and K5HFG on CW

Friday, October 11, 2019

WW8II and KGØVL made another solid CW QSO today.  WW8II peaked 579 at W4DEX and his signal was detected by WA4LDU.  AB4AM on CW was heard at KGØVL.  AB4AM was the usual 599 at W4DEX and WA4LDU.  K4DBK was good SSB copy at W4DEX.  K5HFG reported no signals heard.

Thursday, October 10, 2019

We had the best propagation between WW8II and W4DEX that we've had in many months.  Good enough for a solid 510 mile CW QSO with WW8II peaking 579 at W4DEX and 559 at WW8II.

WA4LDU also detected WW8II at 583 miles.
Signals between WW8II and KGØVL, that has been good recently, was very weak today.
K5HFG reported hearing no one and he was not heard.
Signals on the short paths between WA4LDU, WA1AC and W4DEX were about average with very little QSB.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019

The 443 mile path between WW8II and KGØVL has become more consistent over the past month.  Good enough today to support a solid 559 CW and a 4x4 SSB QSO.  WW8II testing in CW mode at about 1620 UT was 559 at W4DEX.  At 1629 UT 529.  At 1635 the signal was down to 419 with fades into the noise.  WW8II heard AB4AM on CW 449 and detected CW from W4DEX.

AB4AM was 599 CW at  KP2AE, W4DEX and 589 at WA4LDU with noticeable QSB.  AB4AM reported 589 CW from W4DEX.  SSB signals between WA4LDU, KP2AE and W4DEX were good with some deep QSB.

Tuesday, October 8, 2019

AB4AM received the most reports today.  His CW was 599 at KP2AE, WA1AC and W4DEX.  Also his signal was detected by KGØVL (718 miles), WW8II (546 miles) and K5HFG (310 miles).

WW8II and KGØVL had a 529 CW QSO (443 miles)

Propagation on the 51 and 73 mile paths between KP2AE, WA1AC and W4DEX was much better than average with S9+ signals and no noticable QSB

Monday, October 7, 2019

WW8II and KGØVL were able to squeak out a weak CW QSO today.  W4DEX was able to barely detect CW from WW8II.  The only other reception was on the short 103 mile path between WA4LDU and W4DEX where signals between the two were good with noticeable QSB.  K5HFG was also present but was not heard and reported nothing heard at his QTH.

We have seen some evidence the east-west paths are often better than in a north-south direction.  A thought on that by WW8II:

"WW8II-BRUCE: it is those longitudinal magnetic lines we are trying to get through and at the shallow angle we seem to just skip along them but not cross where when at the same latitude we just go through with less loss.  I know my idea ????"

Sunday, October 6, 2019

Propagation was somewhat better today than on Saturday but still way short of the very good signals we had Friday.  WW8II was heard weak by KGØVL and 429 at W4DEX.  WA4LDU reported detecting WW8II's signal.  On the short paths, KE8GC reported WW8II 599 at 130 miles.  AB4AM was 589 at W4DEX and 599 at WA4LDU.  K4DBK whos signal is usually at least detectable by W4DEX was not heard today.
