Propagation was stable today on the distant paths.  More QSB was reported on the local paths than on the 500+ mile signals.  Again today the Iowa path to NC, SC, GA was much better than from Michigan.  For most of the year WW8II's signal was much stronger and consistent in the NC, SC, GA area.

Propagation seems to have improved today, at least on the path between South Carolina and Michigan-Iowa. KGØVL made a complete SSB exchange with K4FI, 838 miles. WW8II was also hearing K4FI. Both KGØVL and WW8II had partial copy on WB4WCJ. That's 932 miles from KGØVL!

W2AZQ reported: "hearing Jeff KG0VL today 569 to 579 1735-1737 including no QSB 1736-1737z"

A solar EUV wave has been crossing the solar disk for the past week and is about to disappear as the sun rotates. Perhaps this has been responsible for the poorer conditions than we experienced during early December. See the link below:

From this link the EUV wave can be seen crossing the sun by selecting the date:

Propagation was about the same as yesterday.  Stations over a few hundred miles were heard on peaks but dipped into the noise on fades.  Some local paths exibited lots of QSB while other paths didn't.

Thursday, December 26, 2019

Good propagation between Michigan and the southeast appears to have returned while the Michigan to Iowa path has deteriorated.  W4DEX was not present for the test today but was recording in CW mode.  KGØVL was 539 with minimal QSB while WW8II was a constant 589, the same strength as AB4AM.  K5HFG was initially 529 but was covered by SSB during most of his transmission.

Propagation today was erratic.  Very good signals on peaks with fast deep fades.  K7TOP's CW was detected by KGØVL (467 miles) and WW8II (755 miles).  WW8II's signal at W4DEX ranged from 589 to undetectable during a 2 min CW transmission.

At W4DEX all stations that transmitted during the CW segment of the test were very close to the same signal strength with no noticeable QSB.  Below is a clip of each station with no amplitude adjustment:

The Michigan to the Carolinas path returned today.  WW8II and W4DEX had several SSB exchanges during the regular 1730 to 1800 UT test session.  WW8II was copied on CW and SSB by WA4LDU.  And WW8II had some SSB copy on WA4LDU, K4FI and WB4WCJ.  The WW8II / WB4WCJ path is 698.4 miles.  WA4LDU and WB4WCJ was operating with 100 watts.  KGØVL was not present so conditions between Carolinas to Iowa is unknown.

Friday, December 20, 2019

Propagation overall was rather poor today compared to the past few weeks.  What seems odd is the Iowa to NC path was the exception.  The KGØVL / W4DEX 808 mile path was still good, CW and SSB copy, except for an occasional fade.  What has been the most consistant paths over 300 miles, WW8II / KGØVL 443 mile and WW8II / W4DEX 510 mile was very poor today.

Thursday, December 19, 2019

Good but variable propagation continued today.  The geomagnetic field was still unsettled and the solar wind speed was around 500 km/sec.

Recently propagation on the more distant path between KGØVL and the southeastern stations has been much better than the shorter, more northern WW8II path.  For the past year, the shorter WW8II path was much better than what we have seen lately.  KGØVL was copied on SSB by KP2AE, WA4LDU, W4DCL, and W4DEX.

Today K5HFG reported several of those quick bursts of signal that have been heard by multiple stations over the past year.  The closest thunderstorms were well over 1000 miles to the southeast in the Caribbean.

Wednesday, December 18, 2019

The Kp index was up to 4 and the solar wind speed was 504 km/sec today.  This seemed to produced some good signals on a few paths and poor propagation on others.
  • KGØVL on CW was detected by WY3T at 1012 miles.
  • KGØVL on CW was 589 at W4DEX, the strongest heard so far during the test.
  • The WW8II / WA4PGI path was very good while the WW8II / W4DEX path was very weak.

Today signals out to about 200 miles were strong and stable.  Beyond that propagation seems to have deteriorated compared to the past few weeks.  Both the WW8II and KGØVL 500+ miles paths were much weaker with fades into the noise received in GA, NC and SC.

We had very good propagation today except during brief fades.  The WW8II / KGØVL 444 miles path has been very reliable recently.  Usually, WW8II at W4DEX is mcuh stronger than KGØVL received at  W4DEX but recently that has reversed.  KGØVL at 808 miles has recently been much more consistent and stronger.

K5KB joined the test today.  His 100 watt SSB and CW was detected at 950 miles by W4DEX.  Audio file as heard at W4DEX:

N5KB at W4DEX

Saturday, December 14, 2019

We had another very interesting midday 160M session.  KGØVL and K4FI made a partial SSB QSO at 840 miles.  KGØVL was copying K4FI running 100 watts.  K5HFG and W4DEX successfully made their first CW QSO at 520 miles.  Overall propagation seemed to be favoring different directions with varying signal strength more than usual.  Best summed up by "KG0VL-JEFF: Very odd conditions today".

Another interesting occurrence was K5HFG hearing one of those near-instantaneous signal peaks from W4DEX on SSB:

18:03 K5HFG: Had a short burst from W4DEX @ 57 and now back to 51

We've had multiple reports of this on CW but this is the first on SSB.  Hearing those peaks on CW left some question as to the actual source of the peaks, i.e. another station on frequency hitting their key.  Hearing the peak on SSB confirms the source.  Thunderstorms were well off the NC,SC,GA coast.

"COSMIC RAY UPDATE: Something ironic is happening in Earth's atmosphere. Solar activity is low--very low. Yet atmospheric radiation is heading in the opposite direction. Cosmic rays percolating through the air around us are at a 5 year high."

Midday conditions remain good on signal peaks for receptions out to at least 800+ miles.
Today KP2AE received several of those near-instantaneous signal enhancements that has been heard by different stations on different paths:

"17:40 KP2AE-JOE: I herd three 1sec. bursts of very strong signals from KG0VL during his 1st min."

A while back one blip on KG0VL was heard by both KP2AE and W4DEX but today it was heard only by KP2AE.

For a short period, about 15 seconds,  WW8II on CW was extremely strong at W4DEX
