DST -6

Propagation between WW8II and KGØVL was good enough for a 52 SSB QSO and 559 CW reception at both ends of the 443 mile route.  
CW on the WW8II / W4DEX 510 mile path was weak both ways.
WY3T reported 549 CW repection from W4DEX but in the other direction signals were 329 at best.
WA4LDU had a little better CW reception on WY3T's signal reporting 529 on a peak.
KP2AE reported W4DEX's SSB signal going from S9+20 all the way down into the noise on the short 51 miles path.  That's over a 50dB signal change!
KI5GLN in Oklahoma reported hearing weak CW and SSB signals which was likely KGØVL in QSO with WW8II.  KGØVL heard CW from KI5GLN at approximately 544 miles.

The northern paths seem to be holding up better than those to the south.  The KGØVL / KØAUW path was useable and both copied CW from WW8II.  KGØVL reported WW8II's CW tone had a hollow sound.  KGØVL also heard AB4AM's CW 419.  WW8II copied a few letters of  K5HFG's call.  Farther south propagation wasn't as good.   W4DEX had much weaker than normal signals from AB4AM, WA4LDU and KP2AE with KP2AE going into the noise at times.  WY3T on CW was not heard by W4DEX but was heard by WA4LDU.  AB4AM made a quick SSB exchange with WY3T.

Propagation perked back up today.  There was a B class solar flare earlier in the day and the DST was +14.  No idea if either or both occurrences had anything to do with the improved conditions today.  Several of our regulars were missing today.  K5HFG was QRT due to thunderstorms so reports were few.  The 443 mile WW8II / KGØVL path produced good CW copy and a 52 SSB QSO.  WW8II on the 510 mile path to W4DEX was good CW at 569 with very little QSB.  WW8II reported W4DEX on CW at 559 with slight QSB.  K4FI and KP2AE detected CW from WW8II.  K4FI on CW was weak but readable for a short time at WW8II over that 574 miles path.

Signals on distant paths continue to decline but still detectable on peaks.  KGØVL detected CW from AB4AM at 717 miles and from W4DEX at 808 miles.  WW8II and KGØVL was able to swap S2 SSB signal reports at 443 miles.  Also a quick SSB QSO between WY3T and W4DEX at 336 miles.   

On some of the shorter paths, we saw very strong signals on peaks with fades close to the noise.  At one point AB4AM was only S2 at W4DEX while only 16 miles from W4DEX his signal was S9 at KW4DE.  At 95 miles the K4FI / W4DEX path was very good with very little QSO the 51 miles between KP2AE and W4DEX had a lot of QSB.  Also, there were very strong peaks between KP2AE and AB4AM.

Our most northern path at 323 miles, KGØVL to KØAWU, was working well today with 55 to 56 SSB signal reports.  At 603 miles WW8II was weak at KØAWU.  The 510 mile path between WW8II and W4DEX was useable on CW but not SSB.  KP2AE also copied WW8II's CW.  

Signals between WA4LDU, KP2AE, K4FI and W4DEX, all within 100 miles of each other, were very good.

An interesting observation today on KGØVL's CW signal.  WW8II, KØAWU, and W4DEX all saw some enhancement on his signal during the last few seconds of his transmission.

As we have come to expect, the sun angle gets higher and the DX signals get weaker.  Even on the most northern path, MN to IA, KØAWU reported: KGØVL 5-2 to 5-3 SSB "best" I have heard him on SSB today.   But on the E/W path propagation seemed better.  WW8II reported:  "KGOVL NOW 579 ON BOTH SAL AND THE INVERTED V"

WW8II was not heard on SSB in GA, SC, and NC but his CW was 569 at W4DEX.  KGØVL who has been regularly copied at least on CW at W4DEX was not heard.  

WY3T on CW was good copy at W4DEX, KP2AE, and KW4DE but on SSB copy was Q3 at best.  

WW8II detected K5HFG on a short 419 peak.  AB4AM had a short burst of signal from KG0VL at 17:48:55 "short burst 44 and gone, 1-2 sec"

At 216 miles AB4AM's signal was very strong with slight QSB today at KP2AE, KW4DE, and W4DEX.

Propagation at < 100 miles, between KP2AE, K4FI, and W4DEX,  was good today with very little QSB.  But there was very pronounced QSB on AB4AM's signal with some S9+ peaks to the above three stations.  But K5HFG reported AB4AM 529 539 no QSB.  On CW KGØVL reported WW8II 539 up and down with rolling qsb.  WW8II was detectable but no copy at W4DEX due to QRN. 

AB4AM reported:  " K0AWU No copy at first. Short burst at 17:49:32 219 then gone"
At the same time, W4DEX heard something odd and was recording.  The recording revealed a sudden increase of noise for about one second but no signal detected.  KØAWU's signal may have been just strong enough to overcome the noise at AB4AM but not enough to for detection at W4DEX.  The lightning map showed almost constant strikes from Texas to Florida during this time.  The burst of noise was a much higher level than the continuous QRN noise level.  Sudden signal enhancements have been reported by several stations over the past few years.  Red sprites and blue jets have been observed by the International Space Station during intense thunderstorms.  So far it is pure speculation that this rare phenomenon may cause sudden atmosphere ionization that would reflect a 160 meter signal.

We found propagation rather poor today at all latitudes from Minnesota to Florida.  Even the KØAWU - KGØVL path wasn't useable some of the time on SSB.  WW8II on CW was barely detectable at W4DEX. There was a lot of QSB on the short paths with a few very unusual good peaks.  AB4AM reported, " KP2AE 57 SSB out of nowhere!!!"

KGØVL's CW transmission was barely detectable at W4DEX most of the time.  However, there was one, maybe two, near instantaneous peaks that have been reported on various paths over the past year.   Lightning has been suspected as to cause this but no strikes on the lightning maps coincided with the peaks.  But the lightning map detectors only indicate cloud to ground strikes.  Below is the audio waveform showing the peak times:

From poor propagation yesterday to fair today.  Propagation between KØAWU, KGØVL and WW8II was good enough with WW8II S9+ SSB peaks from KGØVL.  WW8II and W4DEX was able to swap Q5 SSB reports during peaks with solid copy during the two minute CW transmissions.  Between K5HFG and KGØVL CW was detected both ways.  KA9FTM was good SSB copy on several transmissions at W4DEX.  The WY3T - W4DEX path was solid on CW but useable on SSB only during propagation peaks.

What several of us thought was going to be a good day sure proved to be the opposite.  KGØVL reported: "My 100 mile-distant TIS station is the loudest I have ever heard it"  And AB4AM reported hearing AA4CW running 100 watts S9+.  That looks like a 131-mile path.  So local propagation may have been excellent but beyond that it was poor.  The AB4AM / W4DEX 216 mile path was very poor.  Had there not been several weak DX contacts made the date above would have been shown in red.  Two way SSB contacts were made between KØAWU, KGØVL, and WW8II.  Also, WW8II and W4DEX were able to made an S2 quick SSB exchange on a peak.
