WA4PGI on CW peaked 589 today at W4DEX with one deep fade down to 519. He was also good copy at KP2AE and fair copy at WA1AC during most of his transmission. KP2AE was about normal copy at W4DEX from 1630 UT until about 1648 when deep QSO set in. No signal was detected in both directions from WW8II and KGØVL.
This blog documents the results of daily, near midday, North American 160 meter propagation conditions. Present today for the test we had KGØVL, WW8II, AB4AM, WA9FDO, WA4PGI, KW4DE, KP2AE and W4DEX. Short range propagation was slightly down from yesterday but still fairly good. The most noticeable difference was between AB4AM and W4DEX. Yesterday that 216 mile path supported fair SSB communications. Today only CW was useable with SSB barely detected. Both KP2AE and KW4DE also had useable signals from AB4AM.
At less than 200 miles, WA4PGI on SSB was good copy at KP2AE, KW4DE and W4DEX.
No signal was detected on the long paths between KGØVL, WW8II, and W4DEX. However, WA4PGI did detect CW from WW8II at 360 miles. WA9FDO had light copy on CW from WW8II at approximately 223 miles.

Today we had reports from WW8II, AB4AM, KGØVL, KP2AE, WA4PGI and W4DEX. Initially, WA4PGI and W4DEX had a quick CW QSO while at the same time AB4AM was calling on CW. WW8II detected some CW but it was never determined from which station. Each station made additional CW transmissions. None were heard by WW8II or KGØVL.
WA4PGI and AB4AM on SSB was good copy at both W4DEX and KP2AE. KP2AE at W4DEX was hitting S9 at times with QSB down to S2. No signal was detected from our most distant station, KGØVL.

Signals at 100 miles and less today was down from what has been recently normal. Both the KP2AE and WA4LDU path to W4DEX was fair to poor at times. The 216 miles path between AB4AM to W4DEX was about normal. As usual, AB4AM running 1.5 kw on SSB was good copy at KP2AE, WA4LDU, and W4DEX. WW8II/4 operating at AB4AM's QTH was very good copy on CW at W4DEX, KP2AE and WA4LDU. A quick CW QSO was made between WW8II/4 and W4DEX. KGØVL reported hearing no one nor was his CW heard over the 700+ mile path to all others on frequency.

AB4AM on SSB was Q5 copy at W4DEX. WW8II/4 on CW was operating from AB4AM's QTH. His CW was peaking 579 at W4DEX. WA1AC also reported good CW copy. KGØVL reported no copy on CW from W4DEX or WW8II/4. KGØVL on CW was not heard at W4DEX however WW8II/4 reported a possible burst of CW not long enough for a positive ID during the transmission.
The short 73 mile path between WA1AC and W4DEX provided good signals both ways.

Today WA4PGI was very good copy on both CW and SSB. 579 on CW and peaking S6 at W4DEX which is approximately 20 dB above the noise floor. There was noticeable QSB but overall the best that path has been since January. No signal was heard in either direction between KGØVL and W4DEX during a 2 minute CW transmission by each station.
Off topic side note: KGØVL and W4DEX had a brief SSB QSO on 6 meters after the 160M test was complete.

Present today for the test was WA1AC, WA4LDU, W3VT, AB4AM, WW8II/4, KGØVL, KW4DE and W4DEX. Initially, signals less than 200 miles were fairly good. WA1AC and WA4LDU were S7 at W4DEX but shortly later QSB set in. But both were still Q5 copy all the time. WA4LDU had good copy on WW8II/4 operating from the QTH of AB4AM, a 160-mile path. WW8II/4 on SSB was partially Q5 copy at both W4DEX and KW4DE which is 216 and about 226 miles. WW8II on CW was Q5 at both locations. WW8II/4 reported good copy from W4DEX on CW. KGØVL, the most distant station at over 700 miles from others present, was not herd on CW and did not report hearing any other station.

Present today for the test was AB4AM, KGØVL, WW8II and W4DEX. Both AB4AM and W4DEX detected weak CW from an unknown station just before 1630 UT. The 216 mile AB4AM / W4DEX path was good enough today to support a CW contact but not good enough for SSB copy. WW8II on CW was detected at KGØVL, 443 miles. AB4AM and W4DEX did not hear WW8II. W4DEX on CW was not heard by KGØVL. During the 2-minute transmission by W4DEX, WW8II once again detected quick blips of signal.

Finally, we saw some improvement in propagation today between Iowa and Michigan. KGØVL received complete calls from WW8II during a 2 minute CW transmission. That is about a 443 miles path. At a lower latitude noise was a problem at W4DEX which made reception of KP2AE difficult. No other stations were heard.

Only four operators present today for the test. WW8II, KGØVL, KP2AE and W4DEX. The only contact made was on the short 51 mile path between KP2AE and W4DEX. Conditions on that path were not as good as yesterday and had much more QSB. No trace of a signal was detected during CW transmissions between WW8II, KGØVL and W4DEX.

There were several minor C-class Solar X-ray events this morning. Recently KP2AE and W4DEX have been meeting briefly at 1400 UT on 1899 kHz due to 60M propagation being uncertain. Today at 1400 UT the short 51-mile path was unusable at 100 watts. A check of the current D-Layer ionization map indicated why propagation was poor. There was another quick X-ray burst just a few minutes prior to 1400 UT. See the map below.
At 1630 D-layer ionization had subsided enough the KP2AE / W4DEX path was useable but still noticeably weaker and more variable than normal. W4DEX heard WA4PGI on CW with a weak but Q5 519 signal. WA4PGI did not reply to several calls from W4DEX. KW4DE and W4NUS checked in also reporting weak and variable signals from KP2AE. 2 minute CW transmissions were made between KGØVL, WW8II and W4DEX. No signal was detected between any of those stations.
