17 February 2020
In the NC/SC area all stations withing about 100 miles experienced good propagation with very little QSB.  At around 200 miles signals were much weaker.  The AB4AM / W4DEX path was barely useable on SSB but of course better on CW.  Initially the 165 mile AB4AM / KP2AE path was weak but there was a very good propagation peak around 1800 UT.  WY3T was weak into the NC/SC area but Q5 on CW during most of the transmission.  The real surprise was how strong and almost QSB free KGØVL on CW was over the 808 mile path to W4DEX.   In the other direction, ten minutes earlier W4DEX on CW was very weak on CW.

16 February 2020
We had only three stations on today so not a lot of data.   The KGØVL / KØAWU path was weak but useable on peaks.  KGØVL did not copy CW from W4DEX hover W4DEX was able to copy enough CW from KGØVL to confirm the call.
=================================================================
17:35 K0AWU-BILL: Just barely heard KG0VL call

17:39 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL heard you call again .. in the noise

17:42 KG0VL-JEFF: No copy from W4DEX

17:43 W4DEX-DEX:  KØAWU not heard

17:43 KG0VL-JEFF: KØAWU no signal to 529 and back. Signal back up again at end

17:45 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL, Very weak but building

17:47 KG0VL-JEFF: Jay, do you want to get in on this action?

17:48 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL --- 0-16db above the noise. Started about 10db and faded into the noise then up and down peaking a bit after the one min mark. Into the noise and recovering to 12db at end

17:48 KG0VL-JEFF: somebody tuning

17:48 K0AWU-BILL: UP and DOWN UP and DOWN ... argh!!

17:53 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX, didn't hear anything

17:56 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL now 329

17:57 W4DEX-DEX: no problem confirming KG0VL's call....but poor copy

17:58 KG0VL-JEFF: KØAWU same as earlier, peaks around 529 then to noise and quickly back up again. Just like ocean waves

17:58 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL mostly 10-20db above the noise with occasional QSB lower even into noise at times briefly

15 February 2020
Today's propagation appears to have returned closer to a recent normal.  KGØVL reported receiving AB4AM 539 with no QSB for the full two minute transmission.  AB4AM received KGØVL 439.  WA4LDU copied AB4AM 5x7 on SSB.  W4DEX, recording with an original prototype RF-SPACE SDR-IQ receiver, copied KGØVL steady 559, AB4AM 589 and WA4LDU 579.  K5HFG who was heard yesterday by KGØVL was not heard today.
==================================================================
17:32 AB4AM-ROB: AB4AM Calling K5HFG SSB

17:34 K5HFG: Can not copy any SSB

17:49 K5HFG: I hear no SSB signals

17:49 AB4AM-ROB: Now I'm getting a washing machine noise

17:50 K5HFG: Loud Buzz S3

17:51 AB4AM-ROB: I am getting it on my P3... Out of the N.W.

17:53 KG0VL-JEFF: How about 15 seconds of dashes Rob at 1755?

17:56 KG0VL-JEFF: Still soundin' good on CW up here Rob

17:56 AB4AM-ROB: KG0VL 329 then fade to the noise

14 February 2020

The date above in red letters isn't for Valentine's Day. It indicates propagation appears to have been very poor. KGØVL and KØAWU both reported weak signals with complete dropouts at times between them. CW from K4FI was not detected by WY3T which is unusual.  W4DEX wasn't on but was recording in CW mode.  K4FI was barely detectable at 95 miles.  The only distant signal report was by KGØVL receiving K5HFG on CW.

13 February 2020
Propagation was down today as well as activity.  The short distance between KP2AE and W4DEX, 51 miles, was very poor except during quick peaks.  The WY3T / W4DEX path was useable on CW but not reliable SSB copy.  KG0VL, with a receive antenna problem, detected CW from W4DEX initially a slight improvement toward the end of the two-minute transmission.  W4DEX copied KG0VL much better averaging 559 for the period.  K0AWU reported CW from KG0VL 25 dB above the noise with one 5 dB fade.  K5HFG reported hearing no one with noise up to S5 SSB.
==================================================================
17:36 K5HFG: no SSB sigs heard

17:36 KG0VL-JEFF: Receive antenna down. Broken transformer feed line on SE loop. Very small wires about 8 feet up. Will have to solder in high winds.

17:41 WY3T-TIM: W4DEX CW is 549 steady

17:42 K5HFG: W4DEX no copy

17:50 K5HFG: KG0VL no copy

17:50 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL 25db above the noise first min, QSB down to 20db and then right back up to 25db

11 February 2020

Local propagation, around the Carolinas, was more stable today.  But AB4AM in GA with a very good signal into the Carolinas had fast deep fades.  WY3T was good copy into the Carolinas at times but not as consistent as was heard by W4DEX yesterday.

KØAWU reported very good conditions on the KGØVL path:
17:54 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL 52-54db above noise floor almost no QSB at all. Great sig.

The oddity for the day was how KGØVL's CW was heard at W4DEX and KP2AE.  Initially, this was possibly thought to be due to the effects of digital noise reduction and QRN.  But reviewing the recording looking for KØAWU's CW no QRN or signal peaks was heard.  Below is the full two-minute recording of KGØVL's CW.  The signal is barely detectable during the first minute.  Any idea what caused the signal change during some periods of the second minute?

10 February 2020
We experienced some very odd propagation today.  Overall all stations within the Carolinas reported weaker signals than usual with lots of QSB.  The WA4LDU / W4DEX path was unusually weak with signals in the noise at times.  However K4FI only 16 miles from WA4LDU was just slightly below average at W4DEX and very little QSB was detected.

 Propagation between KGØVL / KØAWU, IA to MN, was good but KGØVL was barely detectable at W4DEX.  The one path that was above normal seemed to be between WY3T, FL, and W4DEX., NC.  At times WY3T at 335 miles was stronger at W4DEX than K4FI at 95 miles.

9 February 2020

The Iowa / Minnesota path seems to have improved from yesterday:
17:50 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL started 41db above noise 30sec in a slow fade to 20db, at 1:15min in built up to 30db set there for a bit then built back to 42db with 10sec to go and ended at 45db :-)
The Iowa / Carolinas path wasn't very reliable.  KGØVL heard nothing from W4DEX on CW during the first try.  A repeat transmission was copied:
17:56 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX heard 529 strongest during middle and EM95 portion.
After several tries, a successful SSB QSO was made indicating ropagation peaks were few and far between.
Signals between K4FI and W4DEX noticeably deteriorated during the thirty minute test period.

=================================================================

17:30 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL -- looks much stronger today on tuneup

17:31 K0AWU-BILL: 16deg overcast noise level S5-6 inverted Vee SSB

8 February 2020

Propagation was poor compared to recent days.  Even the KGØVL / KØAWU path was poor:

17:53 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL -- OUCH -- 21db first 30sec QSB to 15db back up to 23db at 1min mark 30sec later slow fade to 0db for last 15sec
17:54 K0AWU-BILL: Never before had I not heard KG0VL entire sequence

The KGØVL / W4DEX path was also very weak even on peaks.  A quick SSB exchange was made on a peak but at times no signal could be detected.

WY3T into the Carolinas was capable only during peaks between fast deep QSB fades.

Signals between KP2AE, WA4LDU, K4FI and W4DEX were noticeable stronger than normal with very little QSB.   We have seen many times now that when propagation out to a hundred miles is very good the DX signals are down.

"A coronal hole is facing our planet today. It is a slim southern extension of the northern hemisphere polar coronal hole. The effects of this coronal hole could reach Earth on Monday (10 February) as a high speed solar wind stream could sweep past our planet and spark some more high latitude aurora displays."

17:53 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL -- OUCH -- 21db first 30sec QSB to 15db back up to 23db at 1min mark 30sec later slow fade to 0db for last 15sec

7 February 2020
We don't have many reports to base today's propagation on but one DX path was good at least on peaks.  KGØVL was able to copy W4DEX running 100 watts for a Q5 SSB QSO.   We did notice significant QSO even on the short paths.
======================================================================
17:32 K4FI-DOUG: Hardly hear Dex and KP2AE, think the wind is blowing signals out to sea.

17:37 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX very weak on SSB now, right at the noise level

17:41 K4FI-DOUG: W4DEX 5-7/8-9

17:42 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX 529-539 at best on peaks then down to noise level.

17:43 W4DEX-DEX: K4FI 589

6 February 2020

We had very little activity today due to thunderstorms in the Southeast and the MIA stations attending Hamcation in FL.  Even so, propagation was good enough to earn the light green date above.

While the KGØVL to KØAWU path was down from normal KGØVL's signal at W4DEX was very good.  Copy was marginal due to static crashes.  Audio file of KGØVL as heard at W4DEX:

======================================================================
17:28 W4DEX-DEX: I won't be transmitting today. Thunderstorm headed our way. Just starting to hear thunder

17:32 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL 5x6

17:33 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL 5-3 SSB not very good for our path

17:36 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL down to 5x3 on last transmission

17:38 KG0VL-JEFF: KØAWU 559 on peaks then gone completely and back up again.

17:39 W4DEX-DEX: K0AWU not heard

17:41 W4DEX-DEX: KG0VL initially 579 slow fade to 549 then was coming back up until something happen?

17:42 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL better than I expected 559 to 579

17:43 KG0VL-JEFF: No changes on Tx here Dex, power/frequency-stable throughout sequence

17:45 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL -- entire seq was fine -- no unexplained issues

17:46 W4DEX-DEX: Had several power hits.....turned off radio.....will see what was recorded later

5 February 2020

We experienced a lot of QSB today on most paths.  At times it seemed like maybe there was some one-way propagation.  There were times when WY3T, FL, was good copy into the Carolinas but WY3T wasn't hearing the Carolina stations.  Then the reverse would happen.

KGØVL had a very good signal most of the time at W4DEX and KW4DE, both in NC.  On a bit farther path KGØVL was heard in SC at K4FI and KP2AE.

The highlight of the day's session was KØAWU, MN, copying CW from W4DEX, NC, at a distance of  1068 miles:
17:42 K0AWU-BILL: W4DEX observed and heard the entire sequence! 5-10db above the noise !!

=======================================================================
17:29 WY3T-TIM: W4DEX went into a deep fade when you called

17:30 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX calling WY3T on SSB

17:31 WY3T-TIM: K4FI went into a fade that time also but I copied his initial call

17:32 WY3T-TIM: W4DEX copied you 55 that time

17:32 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL 55 SSB 25db above the noise

17:34 WY3T-TIM: W4DEX still 55

17:35 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL -- deep QSB 10-25db above noise

17:38 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX from good copy to noise in qsb

17:39 AG5SP-CHARLIE: no copy in El Paso

17:40 K4FI-DOUG: W4DEX 5/7-8/9 Very little QSB

17:41 KG0VL-JEFF: W4DEX peaking 569 fast qsb

17:41 WY3T-TIM: W4DEX cw is 599 no qsb

17:42 K0AWU-BILL: W4DEX observed and heard the entire sequence! 5-10db above the noise !!

17:43 W4DEX-DEX: WY3T SSB from not detectable to 5x5 peaks, very fast QSB

17:43 WY3T-TIM: K4FI CW is 419 with deep qsb better towards the end

17:44 KG0VL-JEFF: K4FI 529 at the start back to noise last 30 seconds.

17:44 W4DEX-DEX: K4FI 589 slight QSB detected

17:45 AG5SP-CHARLIE: k4fi no copy

17:45 K4FI-DOUG: WY3T 4-5/3-4/9 Abruptly fas

17:46 W4DEX-DEX: WY3T 569 hardly any QSB

17:46 K4FI-DOUG: Faded way down, now coming back up, Fair amount of QSB middle and end.

17:46 KG0VL-JEFF: Did not copy WY3T

17:48 WY3T-TIM: AG5SP CW no copy

17:48 KG0VL-JEFF: Nothing heard from AG5SP

17:49 WY3T-TIM: K0AWU CW no copy

17:49 KG0VL-JEFF: KØAWU 539-549 at best, then qsb to the noise level

17:50 AG5SP-CHARLIE: k0awu no copy

17:51 W4DEX-DEX: K0AWU not heard

17:51 K4FI-DOUG: My noise is down from S7 to S5, Hearing KG0VL good now.

17:51 WY3T-TIM: KG0VL cw can almost tell he is in there but no copy

4 February 2020

KP2AE, WA4LDU, K4FI, and KW4DE reported very strong signals on the short paths today.  Long paths were fairly good also.  KW4DE had solid copy on KGØVL's two minute CW transmission.
KØAWU reported KGØVL's signal as high as 57 dB above the noise.  KØAWU also had QSOs with KC9TCV at 631 miles and KCØIEK at 386 miles.  KGØVL reported a 5x3 QSO with KA9FTM.  KA9FTM was 5x5 into NC as recorded by W4DEX.

Also as recorded at W4DEX:

3 February 2020

Propagation between stations in the southeast was noticeably down today.   Even on the short 51 miles between KP2AE and W4DEX.  WY3T, FL, was very weak into SC and NC.  The most northern path between KGØVL and KØAWU was still holding up well:

17:55 K0AWU-BILL: KG0VL --- "Carbon copy of yesterday" 45db above noise floor first min then slow fade to 30db over next 30sec then back up to 45db at the end

Link below is KØAWU as received by KGØVL.  Sounds as if KØAWU is next door instead of 322 miles away:

The KGØVL - W4DEX link seems to be holding up well.  On CW KGØVL was 569 at W4DEX with one slow fade during the two-minute transmission.  Several Q5 SSB exchanges were made.  Just after the daily test closed KGØVL was in QSO with KØAWU and was still very good SSB copy at W4DEX.
